The Different Sizes of Crock Pots

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

When you’re first learning how to cook with a crock pot, you may find the size you receive or first purchase to be overwhelming because it’s usually the biggest, or one of the biggest, on the market. But crock pots come in a variety of sizes to meet your needs, whether they be cooking for yourself, you and your spouse, your small family or everyone in your extended family. Let’s go over the different sizes of crock pots available on the market and the best way to use each size. The first thing you should know about crock pot sizes is that they are traditionally measured in quarts. This can be confusing for someone who isn’t quite ready to start understanding the conversion of measurements. But never fear. The packaging will typically tell you the basic number of people you can cook for and it will be accompanied by a photograph that should give you a pretty good idea what you’re about to purchase. But if you need a little extra help determining the size of crock pot you need for every occasion and every change you’ll go through in life, take a look at this list and choose the crock pot or crock pots that fit your needs, and remember, it’s okay to need or want more than one.
Crock pots range in size from as little 16 oz. to as big as 10 quarts and even bigger, although you will probably never need anything much bigger than 8.5 quarts, unless you have an extremely large family. Some brands, like Rival, switch to electric roasters once you get higher than 10 quarts and those can get up to 18 quarts or higher. That’s big enough to cook a whole chicken! But let’s not get carried away.

16 oz. slow cookers- The 16oz. crock pot is cute and little, and when we say little, we mean…tiny. 16 oz is the equivalent of 2 cups. If you don’t know what it means to have 2 cups of something, well, let’s just say it’s the equivalent of 4 sticks of margarine or 2 rectangles of cream cheese (regular size, not individual). This is especially great for people who are having a small get together and don’t have a fondue pot or if you want to throw together a quick dip that needs to stay warm. You can just take your slow cooker recipes for cheese dip, put it on high until everything melts together, then set it to warm to keep it from getting cold and coagulated. In case you find the need to know the size of this crock pot in quarts, it is the equivalent of ½ of a quart. The 16 oz. slow cooker is capable of cooking dips as mentioned before as well as fondue and other small, light and yummy crock pot desserts.

2-3 quart slow cookers- 2 quart slow cookers are ideal for 1 to 2 people, whereas 2.5 and 3 quart slow cookers are better for 2 to 3 people. Again, if you’re unfamiliar with measurements, we’ll go over the size of these three slow cookers in terms of cups. If you’re looking at using a 2 quart crock pot, then you’ll want to know that it is 4 times the size of the 16 oz. crock pot. This means that the 2 quart crock pot is the equivalent of 8 cups instead of two, 16 sticks of margarine and 8 rectangles of cream cheese. The 2.5 quart slow cooker is 2 quarts and 16 oz, the equivalent of 8 cups. The 3 quart crock pot is the equivalent of 12 cups.

4 quart slow cookers- When you’re looking to feed a small family of 3 to 4 people, you’re ready for a 4 quart slow cooker and if you want just a little bit extra left over, shoot for a 4.5 quart slow cooker. A 4 quart slow cooker is the equivalent 16 cups and a 4.5 quart slow cooker is the equivalent of 18 cups.

5 quart slow cookers- Slow cookers generally go up on an even basis from size to size so it’s no surprise that the 5 quart slow cooker is ideal for 4 to 5 people and is the equivalent of 20 cups. And if you’re looking for just a little more at 22 cups, choose a 5.5 quart.

6 quart slow cookers- 6 quart slow cookers push the envelope for a nice, intimate dinner and are ideal for serving anywhere from 5 to 6 people and is the equivalent of 24 cups. If you have a couple of big eaters, never fear, because the 6 quart slow cooker also goes up to the half-size at 6.5 quarts and has 26 cups per dinner. A 6 quart slow cooker is capable of cooking a good sized crock pot pot roast with the trimmings.

7 quart slow cookers- When you reach the 7 quart range, you’re past intimate dinners and into the range of the big family meal. A 7 quart slow cooker can cook for 6 to 7 people and is the equivalent of 28 cups. And if you really want to hit 30 cups of food mark tonight, you can choose the 7.5 quart slow cooker.

8 quart slow cookers- Last but not least, we’ll review the 8 quart slow cooker. Coming in at 32 cups cooking capacity, the 8 quart slow cooker can serve 7 to 8 people comfortably or you can tell your guests to wear their fat pants and choose the 8.5 quart slow cooker, capable of cooking up to 34 cups of food. Both the 7 quart and the 8 quart are perfect for those easy crock pot chicken recipes that require a larger amount of food.
Remember, it’s always easier to purchase a second, larger crock pot than it is to figure out how to use one that’s just too large for the meals you are cooking.

Make Your Dog and Yourself Happy with Good Grooming and Skin Care

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Although dogs like to roll around in dirty laundry, poop, dead birds and other smelly things, good grooming and skin care works wonders for them and you. While this grooming may not seem to have long-term benefits, is does. And benefits are twofold, for your pet and you.

Grooming helps keep hair from being matted and encrusted, helps keeps bugs like nasty ticks out of your home and off Fido, and helps keep not only your pet clean but your home, too. Removing loose hairs before they fall all over your carpet and furniture can be a blessing to your housekeeper, spouse, you… and / or whoever does the cleaning regularly.

And good skin care helps keep the dog from getting irritated and itchy, with possible rashes and other skin infections breaking out. Avoid needing trips to the vet by being proactive with a regular skin care regimen.

Grooming and Skin Care Tips

To help with your pet care, here are some tips of the pet trade:

Shampoo & Conditioner

Make your own hair treatments with household items. You can add a little Aloe Vera gel with plain old tap water work to wash your dog.  Simply mix this in your hands and apply it to the dog’s dry coat. For more lather, add a little baby shampoo and continue to rub into dog’s fur gently.   Or, you can also use specially formulated dog grooming shampoo, which works a little better.

For conditioner, you can add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a pint of warm water. Then work this solution into your dog’s coat.  When done, rinse with warm water.   Or, as above, you can use a special dog conditioner, which is available at most good online pet stores.

This is as good a place as any to bring out the dog treat jars as your dog has earned a nice break. Reward Fido for good bath behavior.

Then invite your dog to dry off with some fresh towels, large beach towels work great. There’s also special dog grooming towels which hold a little more water than normal beach towels.  And while it is drying, clean his resting places, too. Wash all dog beds so that your clean dogs stays that way as long as possible.

Skin Care

Believe it or not, dogs suffer from allergies and dry skin, just as humans do. Allergies can actually contribute to dry skin, as can a dry home environment or even a poor diet.  Regardless of how the skin becomes irritated, a home remedy is to poor cooled chamomile tea (that was boiled earlier) on your dog’s coat.

For tougher cases, you may gently rub a little olive oil over the pet’s irritated then wipe off the residue with a clean rag or paper towel.

For unused portions of any grooming products and skin care treatments, use sturdy, affordable dog food storage containers in closed cabinets or closets. Note the date on a piece of tape or label for the containers, for safety.

Note that you do need to provide skin protection from the sun for Fideo, too. The sun can damage your dog’s skin and self, just as is does to humans. So you can:

1)    Provide shaded areas
2)    Provide plenty of water for drinking throughout the day
3)    Place a t-shirt or other light-weight covering on your dog
4)    Give your dog a cool bath with baking soda in the water
5)    Turn on your sprinkler or hose to cool off the dog

You can also head to your local drug store or grocery store with a pharmacy area. Pick up some generic witch hazel for about $1 or so. Then mix small amounts with water, and gently wipe on your dog with a wash cloth. The recipe is:

1 part witch hazel
2 parts water

Time for you and your dog to get to work now. Make your dog and yourself happy with good grooming and skin care!

Backyard Decor Made Simple

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

When planning your dream landscape, it is obviously essential to have all of the resources necessary to create and derive the most joy out of the backyard escape, ultimately making your vision become a reality. Whether you have a tiny yard or even several acres that you want to enhance, these necessary resources will aid in the transformation of your outdoor living space.

If you are a big fan of nature and thoroughly enjoy digging in the backyard, watching birds, or simply sitting back and taking in the sights and sounds of nature, landscaping may be the perfect thing for you. It really enhances the appeal and experience of being in your own little sanctuary.

Whether you’re a die hard gardener or if you simply desire to do a small backyard makeover is irrelevant. You may just want to transform your backyard from a neglected tragedy to a calming escape where you can relax with friends and family. Regardless of the challenge, the most important thing is to get the creative juices flowing in order to make your outdoor paradise solely your own.

The best way to begin your backyard transformation is to learn the different ways to prepare a scenic landscape. Do not focus solely on plants. They are of course very important to the scenery and overall feel of your garden, but take into account the other things you may need to ensure your backyard is what you want and vision it to be. These things could range from a new patio, garden fountain, pond, or some simple décor or accessories that create the look and feel you are aiming for.

A garden or yard makeover can completely change your living space for the better, add to your property value, and provide you with a serene place to enjoy nature. You can start in small steps and gradually add structures such as garden waterfalls or outdoor statuary, as well as plants and other fixtures until you have achieved the yard of your dreams.

If you’re troubled by the challenge of determining what you should do with your landscape design, get excited about how many different options exist and the numerous possibilities of what the space can ultimately mean to you. Also, consider a few of the following resources for assistance:

You can always refer to other people’s gardens to develop your own ideas. One way to do this is to look online. There are thousands of images available to serve as examples and motivation for your masterpiece. It’s always useful to see what other people have used as garden décor, what plants they have chosen, or which garden accents are present. You can use these ideas for inspiration to help you make the decisions regarding your own backyard oasis.

Whether you seek patio accents such as benches, bridges, or even gazebos, or if it is more obscure outdoor water features that you want, there are numerous locales available to find them. If you need a customized product, try searching online for a website that specializes in such products. Many garden accessory stores allow you to customize your creations as well, from the materials used in the actual construction all the way down to the colors desired. It is more pleasing and enjoyable to know that your garden will be unique and of your own design to enjoy.

Are you someone who believes in the statement “Do-It-Yourself?” Usually that is the best way to go about designing a backyard landscape. Although you can opt to pay people to do it for you, it will be much more costly to do so. Why pay all of that extra money when your vision could ultimately be compromised by the hands of someone else? It is ultimately not worth the risk, or the funds for that matter. If you choose to meet the challenge of doing it yourself, not only will your garden sanctuary be customized down to the last detail, it will also be very liberating and rewarding to know that the beauty and splendor you see is all because of your doing.

Basically, your backyard, patio area, or even your porch is just waiting to be transformed into that outdoor haven you’ve always dreamed of—allowing stress free rejuvenation and solace.
