Garden Water Features Advantages and Disadvantages

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Having a garden is an exquisite pleasure one can have. Yet apart from plants and a throng of insects here and there visiting the garden, one can use the garden as a place to relax, meditate and think. And what better way to create this mood of relaxation by adding the soothing sound and presence of water.  Water has always been an effective medium of relaxation and having something in your garden that has water will definitely improve not just the looks of your garden but the feel too.

So, you may ask, how do I achieve this environment of relaxation?  Simply by adding unique garden water features.  These features may include ponds, waterfalls and fountains.  Each of these have an exceptional attribute to it but when combined creates a wonderful ambiance of serenity.  We shall go through these features one by one to highlight its special characteristics and of course, some of its negative aspects as well.

Firstly, we shall show the positive and negative attributes of having a pond in your garden.  Including a pond in your garden is definitely a wonderful idea especially if you love looking at fishes swimming about and are a big fan of the beautiful water plants that can be grown in it.  Apart from the calmness of the fishes treading the water, you can also enjoy nourishing them and providing them a place to live plus enjoy having it as a focal point for your visitors especially if they have accompanying children with them.  You can also use the pond as your outlet for creative energy by adorning it with a variety of water plants available.  The downside of having a pond would surely be the maintenance since you would not want to have murky water in your garden which destroys the essence of clarity or worse, may be a breeding place for insects.

A garden water fall is a largely popular option for most people.  The sound of falling water thoroughly calms down the mind.  Garden waterfalls are great if you love hanging out in your garden to unwind.  It is also a wonderful sight to behold especially if you have large waterfalls in your garden as the cascading water provides a breathtaking scene of falling water.  If you have a pool in your garden, you can even have a waterfall that goes directly to the pool to add some loveliness to the otherwise generic pool.  The negative aspect of having a waterfall though would be the complexity of making one but this would surely not be a problem since there are a lot of available ready-made waterfalls in the market and you can even have one customized as your budget permits.

Fountains display a magnificent showcase of water. Apart from its glorious presence in the garden, it can also serve as a bird bath which would be an added bonus to the scene.  Whether you have large fountains or small ones installed in your garden, the effect of having one is breathtaking in itself.  Fountains are wonderful because they tend to create a spectacle through its different ways of presenting water to the observer.  They also help in the removal of negative ions in the air, thus becoming a mood uplifter.  Similar to ponds, fountains have the tendency to store water if they are not turned on so they may be a breeding place for insects as well.

Now that the different advantages and disadvantages of each feature have been presented, choosing which one to set up in your garden would highly be dependent on the reasons why you want their presence in your backyard.  If a simple reason such as relaxation suits you then you can use any of the three features since all of them have the ability to create a relaxed environment.  However, if posterity is on top of your list, you can employ all three features to create not just a tranquil garden but an amazing sight as well. Though it is always important to note that if one does it for you stick with that so you would have fewer worries in the variety of maintenance as compared to maintaining three different water features.  You would not want to defeat the purpose of relaxing by having unnecessary worries about your garden, when in the first place you created it for relaxation.

Garden And Backyard Water Features

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Bored of the same old looks of your existing garden? Maybe it is time to consider giving your garden a fresh new face lift. Other than substituting or adding new plants or changing the arrangements of flower pots, why not spice up your garden and backyard with a beautifully landscaped pond, backyard fountain or a miniature waterfall? Water features had long been recognized by landscaping experts as being one of the essential elements of outdoor gardens and backyards. Nothing compares to the tranquil and soothing sound of flowing water while relaxing or having a cup of morning coffee at your garden patio. Garden and backyard water features works many wonders, not only as being the focal point of your garden, but it is also able to create and establish a serene and calm atmosphere for your outdoor haven.

There are endless great ideas and different types and forms of water features to choose from. Among the most popular ones include cascading waterfall, cast stone waterfall, multi-tiered fountains, barrel fountains, pond fountains and fish ponds. It is always best to do a thorough research before making your decision. Books and magazines on outdoor gardening and landscaping are good resources of getting superb ideas. You can also browse through the internet as there are thousands of websites offering fresh and excellent ideas and useful information on creating a garden water feature. Another way is by visiting places and locations such as parks, public gardens, buildings with beautiful outdoor landscape or even your friends’ and relatives’ homes to obtain the ideas you need which you can then improvise to suit your own budget and preferences.

There are several factors that need to be considered in determining the most ideal and perfect feature for your garden. First and foremost, you would want to decide on the design, size and scale of your water feature. Is it going to be a highly structured backyard waterfall with intricate design or just a small, simple and minimal concrete fountain? Whichever choice you make will determine how much you should be spending on the project, the duration of time acquired to complete it, the number of workforce needed to build it and the cost of maintaining the feature. The size of the water feature also depends on the amount of space you have to build it. Larger features require bigger space such as large outdoor gardens, but there are also water feature designs that can fit perfectly into limited spaces such as a balcony of an apartment.

Placement is yet another important factor to be considered. Take a look at your garden’s layout. If you already have an existing pond in your garden, you may want to build a waterfall to complete the whole look. If not, the new backyard water falls can be constructed at a pre-existing slope or you may have to create an artificial slope for your waterfall. The water feature must serve as the main feature of your garden or backyard to be enjoyed from both outdoor and indoor. The spot that you choose must also be near to water and electrical source to be supplied to the feature.

Some are most willing to spend lavishly to build or upgrade their garden while some tend to stick to a smaller budget. Many landscaping companies provide services to do up your garden. Depending on how elaborate the project is, these services are often quite costly as the whole process involves planning and consultation from the landscape architect, designing, purchase of raw materials and labor charges. But you can definitely be satisfied with the end result as these professionals are able to deliver and perform their best most of the time. If you only have a small allocation for your garden project, you may consider building your own water feature for your garden. All the materials and equipments needed can be obtained and purchased from your local hardware store or garden supplies vendors at astonishingly reasonable price. Thus, it is quite possible to cut down the overall cost. However, you must have the confidence to complete the whole project and most importantly the knowledge in putting the pieces together as this project may involve several technical processes such as fitting of water pumps and supplying electrical source to the features.
